The asterix is on the left, and the wonky pound sign on the right. I've never done something like this, and as I'm a pretty linear person, the future unknown and different blocks are causing me a little stress. I'm a planner, and I like having some idea of the colors, fabrics, design, etc., that I'll be using.

"Father Christmas &amp; Sled" is designed by Dana Thompson (Country Harvest), copyright 1998.

I reduced the pattern to 83%, so he's about 20 inches tall. Not only did I prefer that smaller size, but it I also wanted to use a  sled I had on hand and needed the doll to be of a more appropriate scale.

You can't tell in these photos, but the bottom part of the head remains glue and clay free so I can sew it back on the body. In theory, anyway.

I tried to maintain the shape of the original head as much as possible - goofy as it was.

This way I can allow ample time for the clay to dry, without feeling like I'm idle.

Up to this point, I've done no sanding and all the sculpting has been done with my fingers. I'm still adding to and refining features. There's still some asymetry to the face, but that's fixable. The cameo is just a little darker than what I've been using, and would also work very well for doll skin. Yesterday I was able to stuff and attach the arms, but it was a mystery to me how to stuff the arms (and legs) enough to fill them out, but allow for some movement. So there's not much movement. I pinned the arms down for the photo.I also tacked down the goofy little ears. I don't feel that ancient. Today my mom sent me a photo of the naval hospital where I was born. I thought "what a charming vintage photo." And then "wait a minute, that means I'm vintage."

I'm headed for work this morning (and will work tomorrow as well), which means we will have our get-together and gift exchange with family in January. These beads provide some structure to the wrists and ankles when employing "buried bead joints." Despite my cold and stuff fingers, I decided to get some work done on the hands and feet of my current Averill doll. 

Each piece has a wood bead inserted. The fingers have chenille stem armature, and the toe divisions are hand-sewn. It'll probably rain, but that'll be ok. Anyone who lives in this neck of the woods has appropriate raingear. There are 3000 participants this year; a sold-out event.
