At least it's a start...

Despite myself, I've managed to get a decent start on my Treasures of the Gypsy challenge doll. I found some mystery fabric for her skin, purchased at Fabric Depot in Portland. It's a nice flesh tone on one side only. I usually use dyed muslin, but this is something different. Now I'm wishing I'd bought more.

I made her lower legs from dupioni silk. I'm glad I remembered to trim my seam allowances a little wider, as this stuff frays quite easily. I found a couple big buttons with which to joint the hips. The buttons will be covered with the skin fabric, so it really doesn't matter that they're mismatched.

I've got the upper and lower arms sewn. I just need to stuff and joint them. Then it's on to the challenging part - building her costume.

  3. And an absolutely beautiful start, Deanna! Is the 'mystery' fabric cotton?

  5. G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S! Can't wait to see the finished product! Wish dupioni was the fabric of our lives. Sigh...

  6. Thanks! I've got today off, and as it's raining cats and dogs I have no reason NOT to seclude myself in my sewing room. Though I am a but daunted when it comes to the costuming. I know more is better as far as this challenge is concerned, but I'm just not an embellisher.

Susie - I think the mystery fabric is cotton (I burned an edge and it did not melt like a synthetic would). I like it.

Kate - I loved your comment about the dupioni. So True! I love the feel and the rich colors.

I've got to stop procrastinating and get to work!
