Experimental Trio

Before my last two completed dolls, I experimented with a new doll body. Trying to get the size and shape I wanted, I made three stuffed bodies.

#1 was too long and thin
#2 was too angled at the bottom
#3 is a bit more full at the bottom

I ladder stitched all three around the waist for a couple reasons (that I can't really remember now). It may have been to round them out a bit more, and in #1's case, shorten her a bit. Maybe all three needed to be shortened, but I won't know until I sew and stuff another to see what I was thinking at the time.

All three have had paperclay added to their heads, which was my intention from the start.

Since I don't really throw anything away, my plans for these prototypes are:

To make #1 into a Day of the Dead character
To make #2 into a character of some sort
To make #3 into an Izannah-style doll

Pumpkinhead

Call for Submissions! We're excited to announce that a brand-new special edition of Art Doll is coming your way in 2021, and it will be bigger and better than ever! We're currently seeking submissions of all types of autumn and Halloween-inspired dolls — from spooky to whimsical, from clay to fabric, from realistic to primitive. So I decided to do this, and though that another Pumpkinhead doll would be perfect. I submitted her photo today, and she may or may not be accepted for the September issue featuring these seasonal dolls. But it was fun anyway.

Ginger

Ginger is a commissioned doll, representing a wonderful woman of the same name. I used craft velour for the body (Averill pattern) and head (modified Cecelia pattern). She has jointed shoulders, elbow, wrists, hips, knees and ankles.

Life Book 2021 Taster Sessions

Life Book 2021 Artist Teachers offered free Taster Sessions in the fall of 2020.

This lesson, taught by Eulalia Mejia (also known as Happy Chinchilla) was one I did with my granddaughter in January, 2021. This was the perfect project to do with a 10 year old.

Life Book 2021 January Lessons

Despite the fact that I made very little art in 2020, I signed up for Life Book 2021 anyway. After all, I'm going to retire some day. While I'd like to resolve to make more art this year, this is not a guarantee. COVID has certainly a factor this new year as it was in 2020.

These first lessons are from Tamara Laporte, but creator of Life Book.
